Macular Degeneration Week

By September 12, 2018January 8th, 2024No Comments

So it’s AMD week. What is AMD and how do I know if I have it? AMD stands for Age-related Macular Degeneration. It is a condition that can affect your eyes as you get older, hence the Age-related part of the title! The leading cause of blindness in the over 50 age group is in fact AMD. And as most people age well like a fine wine the same cannot be said for the macula. The macula is a small part of the eye that is responsible for central vision which allows us to see small detail. And as we all know, it is all about the detail. So how can we check if your macula is in as good a shape as the rest of you? Firstly, if you have not been to an optician in two years or more please do come and see us. We are pain free! We will check the back of your eye for any deterioration using different methods such as OCT, Amsler grid, Ophthalmoscopy. An OCT is a photo taken with a camera that gives us an image similar to an ultra sound. It allows us to spot early indicators of AMD and allows us to put together a treatment plan going forward. If after all our tests are complete and we find nothing to worry about then we will have a celebratory coffee and make plans to do the same again in two years! Also, we have the best glasses collection ever, just so you know.
