Gill Opticians has been renowned for over 43 years, for our comprehensive eye examinations. We are here primarily to look after your eye health and correct your vision. We believe that adequate time must be devoted to individual patients to ensure that we examine all areas of the eye in the greatest detail. We dedicate a minimum of 45 minutes to each eye examination with our competent experienced optometrists. All of our examination equipment is of the highest standards and we boast OCT (retinal scanning and photography) as standard. We also have a Humphrey Visual Field machine, the gold standard for checking the peripheral vision of a patient.

OCT is capable of scanning beyond the retina giving us a layer by layer view of the back of the eye important for the diagnosis of macular degeneration and other degenerative diseases such as Glaucoma.

CONTACT LENS EXAMINATION & FITTING
Gill Opticians has been fitting contact lenses in Dublin for over 43 years. In the beginning, we offered what was available, gas permeable hard lenses. Since Paul started fitting contact lenses in Dalkey a lot has changed in the innovation of materials and mass production facilities. Paul decided to lead a movement towards daily disposable contact lenses back in the 1980s with the belief that for hygiene, comfort, and vision the daily disposable should be worn by all patients where possible.
Gill Opticians believes in offering only the best to its patients. There is sometimes resistance by clients to switch from 2 weekly or monthly lenses to dailies due to the increased cost. Our stocked contact lenses cost less than a cup of coffee at €2 per day. This is cheap for a product with unrivalled comfort and clarity.
We have teamed up with the 3 world-leading premium contact lens suppliers, Johnson and Johnson Acuvue, Alcon, and Coopervision. Sourcing the best lenses on offer from these companies has resulted in Gill Opticians being able to offer contact lenses solutions for nearly any prescription no matter how complex.
We stock in house Dailies Total 1 by Alcon and Acuvue Oasys One Day contact lenses from -1.00Ds to -7.00Ds ensuring you can collect your contact lenses the same day as you order them. These 2 contact lens designs do not dry your eyes like previous generations of contact lenses and Total 1 by Alcon actually increase in moisture, as the day progresses meaning contact lenses can now be worn by patients suffering from mild dry eye.
Dalkey is along the DART line neighbouring Killiney, Dun Laoghaire, Sandycove, Blackrock, and other coastal south Dublin towns. Due to its proximity to the Dun Laoghaire yacht clubs, Killiney Hill, many golf clubs, and its idyllic location, Gill Opticians has found a huge surge in desire from its clients to wear contact lenses for outdoor sports such as sailing, cycling, running, golf, and hill walking.
We believe that daily disposable contact lenses are the present NOT the future of contact lens wear. 95% of Gill Opticians contact lens wearers are wearing daily disposable contact lenses.
We lead with innovation.
In 2019 Gill Opticians partnered up with Coopervision’s latest groundbreaking contact lens technology. The Misight contact lens is designed to reduce the progression of myopia in children. Children as young as six years old can be fitted with this lens which is proven to dramatically slow down the progression of myopia or short-sightedness in children

CHILDREN’S EYE EXAM
Gill Opticians has been looking after the development of children’s eyesight for 40 years. We examine children from the age of 4 to rule out any potential visual complaints.
Eye complaints such as myopia and hyperopia may not be obvious to a parent and could be mistaken as reduced developmental milestones. A child’s visual pathway is fully developed by the age of 11 and it is therefore very important to catch and treat any visual impairment at its earliest stage. Many eye complaints are hereditary and can skip a generation. If myopia is treated early enough the progression can be greatly reduced with the pioneering treatment of myopia control contact lenses.
Indicators of a childs potential visual impairment include
- Sitting close to the TV.
- Rubbing their eyes a lot.
- Struggling with reading.
- Lack of attention span in class.
- Clumsiness or lack of sporting abilities.
If there is any family history of visual problems please contact us by phone on 01 285 3227 to discuss or click here to make an appointment.
